Sentinel Driver and Toshiba Notebooks

Many Toshiba notebook computers, including some TE series and Satellites, can hide parallel port dongles from applications, by allowing the Sentinel System Driver to detect the USB port but not the parallel port.

This prevents applications secured by parallel-port Sentinel keys, such as Geocomp and Terramodel, finding the keys. Applications which use USB-port Rainbow Sentinel keys are not affected.

Courtesy of Dimension Computing and refined by our users, here is our method for fixing this problem:

  1. Shutdown PC
  2. Hold Escape when powering up
  3. F1 to enter BIOS setup
  4. PGDn to second page
  5. Select Configuration
  6. Set Device Config = All Devices
  7. Select I/O Ports
  8. Set parallel port to enabled and LPT1
  9. Set Port to IRQ7 and CH3
  10. Save settings
  11. Restart PC.

Some even newer Toshiba notebooks, have a different problem: both the USB dongle and the BIOS configuration are hidden.
